Château des Milandes achieved worldwide fame as the passion project and home of Josephine Baker. Yet its history goes back much further: until the French Revolution, it served as the undisputed residence of the Caumont family and was filled with aristocratic life throughout the 16th century. However, the family's later conversion to Protestantism shattered the peaceful harmony of this "Sleeping Beauty Castle." After the Revolution, the glory of the Caumonts finally faded—the château was abandoned, sold in the 19th century without real interest, and ultimately left to decay. It was Josephine Baker who eventually awakened the estate from its slumber together with her "Rainbow Tribe," giving it a new and unforgettable soul.
