Halfway between Les Eyzies and Montignac-Lascaux, the cliff of La Roque Saint-Christophe rises above the Vézère valley. This limestone wall, 1 km long and up to 80 m high, has been continuously shaped by river and frost, evolving into a site of a hundred rock shelters and long aerial terraces. These natural cavities have been inhabited for 55,000 years and were transformed during the Middle Ages into a fortress and a troglodyte city, remaining in use until the beginning of the Renaissance.
