When visiting Grasse, it is necessary to deal with the subject of "perfume". Not just for the sake of the subject, but because otherwise the understanding of the place through which you walk or drive remains closed. As always, everything is connected to everything else, and the development of the city is inextricably intertwined with the development of fragrances. After a while I had the feeling as if the history, the past of the city and the region reaches continuously and without breaks to the present and is just there as a matter of course.
It all began not long before the First World War when Eugène Fuchs, an entrepreneur with heart and soul who had succumbed to the magic of perfume, decided to start his own business. His business idea was based on a completely new concept at the time, the direct sale of perfume products to tourists who were beginning to discover the charms of the Riviera. This was the beginning of Fragonard Perfumery in 1926.
The choice of the company name is a tribute to the famous painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806) from Grasse, the Eugène Fuchs of the city of Grasse, which became home to him and his family, and the beauty of art in the 18th century. This decision also expresses his desire to continue and preserve his activity in and with his company traditions.
The spirit of the house is now carried on in this spirit by the next three generations, who today have taken over the management of the company. They built new production and distribution units in Grasse and Eze, as well as in Paris. Jean-François Costa began the modernization of the company. A great lover of art, in the 1970s he gathered his collections of objects related to the history of perfumery to open the Musée de Grasse and two small museums in Paris.
Today, the daughters Agnès and Françoise lead the destiny of the company. Like previous generations, they develop a refined universe inspired by Provence or exoticism of perfumed products of the company to adapt their business to new, the ever-changing style of new times.
