Grottes de Sare

Highlights

Produced by: logo © 2023

The massive limestone massif in Sare is rich in numerous caves. We visited one of these formations with an atypical geological structure: the Lezea, also known as Grottes de Sare.

Mount Atxuria near Sare is covered with clayey soil, which limits the infiltration of rainwater. This circumstance results in original shapes and massive halls of dizzying proportions, which today still look much as they did over two million years ago.

Traveling to the Grottes de Sare in the heart of the Basque Country.

Monumental Proportions

The Grotte de Sare is among the largest entrance caves in Aquitaine. In addition to the immense galleries, one specific hall impresses, having been used as a dwelling by prehistoric humans. It is a journey through time that makes the connection between natural history and human settlement palpable.
