Photography is More Than a Snapshot Click

Anyone seriously interested in the art of photography must also understand the traditional methods of production—even if, on the surface, every smartphone can take pictures today. This is the crucial difference between mere "snapping" and true photography. In Carlux, within the former railway station, this difference can be experienced firsthand. It is a place that invites you to pause, even if you are just passing through for a quick break.

A Pit Stop for Aesthetes

Railway lines are being closed in France as well, but here in Carlux, a jewel remained. Lovingly and tastefully renovated, the station stands directly on the former railway embankment, which today serves as a bicycle expressway between Sarlat and Cazoulès. This path runs for over 23 kilometers, partly right along the river—and the Espace Robert Doisneau is undoubtedly the cultural highlight of this route.

Design Meets Authenticity

Across three levels, the station presents an exhibition unique in France. It houses the only permanent collection dedicated to Robert Doisneau. Particularly moving: the ground floor features photographs of Doisneau's holidays in the Dordogne and Lot from August 1939. These are images from the eve of the Second World War—family scenes, canoe trips, timeless landscapes of a (nearly) unchanged Dordogne.

Café de la Gare & More

In addition to Doisneau, the station also provides a stage for contemporary photographers. Furthermore, it houses the tourist office of the Pays de Fénelon—the perfect place to find information about the Périgord Noir. And, of course, a real "Café de la Gare" is a must. From April to November, it welcomes cyclists, drivers, and art lovers with homemade dishes made from fresh, local products.
