The German Wineroad
Gentle wine country, lush orchards, the Palatinate Forest with quiet valleys and murmuring streams, and a Mediterranean climate - that's the German Wineroad.
Germany's first wine tourism route starts in the north at Bockenheim (near Worms) and ends after about 85 km at the French border in Schweigen. From Maikammer to Schweigen, the section is also called the Southern Wine Road.
The ideal way to travel the tourist route is by bike. The picturesque villages often invite you to pass slowly through, spontaneously stop somewhere and just walk a few steps. A bicycle can also be pushed... So if you are on the road with your own muscle power, you can discover the region on the bike or hiking route of the German Wine Route.
We arrived by car and caravan, found the campsite of our choice in Wachenheim to get to know this region with the eBike.
The wine gives the landscape its very special character. Here, the attractions of the Palatinate Forest combine with the vineyard landscape, as well as numerous castles and palaces - Hambach Castle, Wachtenburg Castle, Neuleiningen Castle, Trifels Castle, Villa Ludwigshöhe Castle, to name just a few.
The Palatinate cuisine contributes significantly to the enjoyment of this wonderful vacation landscape: Whether you want to try the hearty Palatinate cuisine - or are on a culinary voyage of discovery, the chefs on the German Wine Route conjure up culinary delights from the resources of the region. But what would the best food be without the right wine? More than 300 individual vineyards ensure a wide range of wines. With an average of 1,800 hours of sunshine per year, nature does its best to allow ripe, racy but also full-bodied and elegant wines to flourish on the slopes of the Palatinate
The best known and most typical grape variety is Riesling, which is available here in countless flavor variations. In the area of the Southern Wine Route, the Burgundy varieties Weiss-, Grau- and Spätburgunder are particularly in demand. Countless wine festivals offer guests the opportunity to convince themselves of the quality and loving care of the wines and to get to know the open, cheerful Palatinate people.

And to really enjoy wine and landscape, comfortable accommodations varying from the pension to the noble hotel or a campsite invite you for a stay overnight.
Motorhome drivers will also find more or less appealing sites, which we don't like quite frankly.
