Rothenfels Castle was founded around 1150 by the Franconian nobleman Marquard II of Grumbach. The noble family of Grumbach owned extensive lands in Thuringia, Main-Franconia, and Swabia and established a strategic network of strongholds and monastery bailiwicks. As close confidants of the Staufer kings Conrad III and Frederick I Barbarossa, as well as the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, they played a key role in the imperial politics of their time.
Rothenfels Castle rises majestically above the Main Valley, blending almost seamlessly into the wooded silhouette of the Spessart. Anyone approaching the complex from the surrounding meadows immediately understands why this place has been regarded as an impregnable guardian of the river routes for nearly 900 years. The tranquility that this sight exudes today offers only a glimpse into its eventful history, which spans from aristocratic pride to the youth movement.
As you walk through the massive castle gate, you immediately sense the fortified past of this Romanesque complex, which has managed to preserve its medieval core despite later alterations. The gate serves as a threshold between the outside world and the tranquility — or the laughter of the young people — in the inner courtyard.
The fact that this historic building complex feels so vibrant today is primarily due to its use as the Jugendburg since the 1920s, when Romano Guardini and the Christian youth movement transformed the site into a gathering place where architecture and nature blend harmoniously.
