In the heart of Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère lies a hidden architectural treasure that immediately transports the observer to the late Middle Ages. The imposing keep (Donjon) and its accompanying manor house are today considered one of the rarest and most authentic testaments to the 14th century in the entire Périgord.
Behind the wrought-iron gates of the Donjon et Manoir de la Salle, a masterpiece of Périgordian architecture reveals itself. Only since 2021 has this ensemble, whose mighty tower dates back to the 12th century, been open to the public for the first time. In the stylishly furnished rooms, visitors can expect a fascinating collection ranging from ancient instruments to historical herbalism.
Living Authenticity
In the kitchen, time seems to stand still: the open fireplace, the stone sink, and the original rammed earth walls tell of daily life in centuries past. One can almost hear the bustling activity at the hearth. It is this extraordinary authenticity that has kept the estate under official heritage protection since 1957.
From the idyllic gardens, the view falls upon the heavy, characteristic tiled roofs, before the ascent to the old, covered battlements is rewarded with a spectacular panorama over Saint-Léon. A particular pride of the house is the majestic giant cedar tree in the park—its cool shade is a valuable gift for the entire village on hot summer days.
Our Recommendation
Take this rare opportunity to experience the living culture of the nobility in its most original form, far from modern reconstructions. A visit to La Salle is a deeply emotional journey back in time, directly into the heart of the old Périgord.
