Where the Odenwald meets the Spessart, Scottish soul encounters German engineering.

Our destination is St. Kilian Distillers – a name that has long been making waves in the world of fine spirits. While Rüdenau is officially in Bavaria, geographically it cares little for small-scale borders. We make a conscious detour to this tranquil village to find a distillery that works strictly according to the Scottish model, but with uncompromising precision.

A touch of Scotland in the heart of Lower Franconia: The home of St. Kilian.

Amazing things have happened here since its founding in 2016. Just three years later, in 2019, the first whisky was released and immediately caused a stir. The secret? A perfect symbiosis of pure barley malt, massive handcrafted copper pot stills from Scotland, and that famous German know-how that optimizes every detail. The result: internationally acclaimed whiskies that need not fear comparison with the classics from the Highlands.

A Look Behind the Scenes

Modern architecture meets tradition: The distillery in Rüdenau

A visit to Rüdenau is much more than a mere inspection – it is an immersion into a world of aromas. During a guided tour, you can explore the distillery's hallowed halls. You'll gain fascinating insights into the entire process, from milling the malt to the magical moment when the clear distillate flows from the copper stills. The grand finale, of course, is the tasting of the award-winning spirits.

In addition to the core whisky range, St. Kilian also surprises with an excellent Dry Gin – proof that they have mastered the art of distillation in all its facets.

Patience in oak: The impressive barrel warehouse

The heart of the operation is undoubtedly the Single Malt Whiskies. They are based on pure barley malt and breathe the spirit of Scottish tradition. Whether it's the "Classic" variety (mild, fruity, alluring) or the "Peated" versions (intense, smoky, strong in character) – the range is impressive.

The portfolio is complemented by first-class Blended Malt Whiskies, where single malts from different distilleries are married into a new, harmonious masterpiece.

The copper heart: Where the spirit is born

A real highlight for pop culture fans are the Blended Whiskies from the "Bud Spencer" and "Terence Hill" series. These compositions of single malt and grain whiskies are much more than just collector's items – they are expertly crafted homages to the two screen legends.

The distillery also regularly releases limited editions and special bottlings. These experimental releases, with unique maturation processes in exotic casks, are highly sought after by connoisseurs.

A Brief Note on the Name: Have you wondered why we always write Whisky and not Whiskey here? This is not a proofreading oversight. The spelling without the "e" refers to the Scottish tradition. Since the creators of St. Kilian are committed to the classic European school of distilling, their liquid gold proudly bears the name without the additional "e".
