Wachenheim Castle was built around 1730. Today it is an important cultural monument in the middle of Wachenheim an der Weinstrasse.
Baron Johann Georg von Sussmann, court councillor to the Elector of Mannheim, had Wachenheim Castle built in a rural baroque style. In 1880, the wine merchant Georg Böhm bought the property and ran a sparkling wine factory next to it.
Between 1924 and 1939, the then majority owner of the winery, Kommerzienrat Carl Josef Wagner, had the property remodeled. The entire ensemble, such as the gate passage, the administration building, the large marble hall and the bottling hall, have remained almost unchanged architecturally to this day.
Each sparkling wine gets its individual touch through the selection and composition of the grape varieties used. Then there are basically three types of sparkling wine production: tank fermentation, bottle fermentation using the transvasation method, where the wine is first put into a bottle for fermentation and then, when ripe, into a "new" bottle, which is then destined for the connoisseur, and the "traditional method", where the sparkling wine matures in the same bottle throughout the entire fermentation process. The Editions sparkling wines of Schloss Wachenheim are produced exclusively by the traditional bottle fermentation method.
Schloss Wachenheim's top-quality products are composed of select, regional grape varieties that give each cuvée its individual character. The premium sparkling wines of their varietal editions, made exclusively from Palatinate quality wines offered in limited editions. The edition sparkling wines mature for at least 9 months in the bottle. Thus, sparkling wine lovers can enjoy the high quality of their cuveés again and again.
