What would the world be without spices? There would be no flavor to sausage, meat, cheese or pastries. Christmas gingerbread and cookies could not exude their inimitable fragrance and the cooking pots of the world would be a haven of culinary dreariness and boredom.
An exciting journey into the world of the senses is promised by 1,000 m² of exhibition space dedicated to the cultural, historical and botanical facets of spices.
The German Spice Museum shows how spice from distant lands found its way to us in earlier times. We start at the bazaar with fragrant spices and oriental music and dive into the world of spices. We travel along the Silk Road and learn how spices were brought to Europe by sea and how the arduous journey across the Alps was mastered.
Information and informative exhibits lead the visitor to selected scenes from the past and present. Interactive smelling and listening stations illustrate the importance of spices in crafts, the food industry, culinary art and medicine.
The Botanikum, the heart of the museum, stages the origin and use of the individual spice plants in a unique way.
