High above the rooftops of Miltenberg thrones Mildenburg Castle—a guardian over the Main Valley that today no longer separates with walls, but connects with art. Since July 2011, the lovingly renovated castle has housed the Castle Museum. It is a place of silence and contrasts, where walls from the 12th century create a space for dialogue between yesterday and today.
The exhibition is an encounter of a special kind: around 170 works from the 20th and 21st centuries meet the profound spirituality of Russian and Greek icons. This impressive ensemble is complemented by over 180 Romanian icons on glass from the Nentwig Collection. It is fascinating to see how the clear formal language of modernity and the gold-shimmering tradition of icon painting harmonize in these rooms.
The roots of the castle likely date back to 1144, built by order of King Konrad III. However, its splendor faded over the centuries. When the city of Miltenberg acquired the complex in 1979, it was barely habitable and in urgent need of renovation. It took vision and courage to transform the crumbling fortress into a cultural gem.
After years of searching for a meaningful use, the idea emerged in 2000 to establish this unique museum in cooperation with the Diocese of Würzburg. Following extensive renovations that began in 2010, the museum finally opened its doors in 2011, breathing a completely new, vibrant consciousness into the ancient walls.
For those who need a break after all the inspiration, take a look beyond the boundaries of art. Mildenburg rewards its visitors with a dreamlike panorama over the Main Valley. Up here, between heaven and earth, you will find the tranquility to reflect on what you have seen. A conclusion that stays with you.
