Wertheim has evolved into the second-largest center of the German laboratory glass industry, following Mainz. The foundation was laid in 1950 with the establishment of the first glassworks. This industrial evolution received another significant boost in 1972 with the construction of a glass melt for the production of glass wool. It is impressive to see how deeply this tradition is rooted here.
Right on the ground floor, you dive directly into the world of glass manufacturing. Here, not only finished works of art are presented—you also have the rare opportunity to look over the shoulder of a glassblower during his fascinating and highly precise work. You can literally feel the heat and concentration required to give shape to the molten glass.
For us, the museum acts like a path leading through more than 3,000 years of the history of this unique material. From ancient beginnings to the most modern technical applications, the infinite versatility of glass is documented here in a tangible and understandable way.
Design has an amazing persistence. A perfect example is the iconic shape of the Maggi bottle, which almost everyone knows. In the museum, you can admire the original design, which has been maintained in its basic features to this day—proof of how timeless good glass design can be.
For millennia, glass and jewelry have been inseparable. The collection includes exquisite pieces that not only invite admiration but also inspire the viewer to dream. It is the crowning conclusion of a tour through a world full of light and transparency.
