From Buttons to Mammoth Tusks

For a full 140 years, the Wertheim Historical Society and the city of Wertheim have collected with tireless passion. The result is a collection of supra-regional importance concerning the former County of Wertheim. The range is truly incredible: exhibits span from a tiny button and prehistoric mammoth tusks to a massive combine harvester. It is a place where history has been preserved in all its multifaceted glory.

Five Houses Full of Life

The museum is not a classic functional building; it breathes history itself. Across an impressive 2,200 m² of space, spread over five listed buildings in the heart of Wertheim's picturesque old town, the past comes to life. In addition to the permanent collection, two to three changing special exhibitions per year invite visitors to rediscover new aspects of regional culture and history.

Shipping, Water, and Tradition

Right in the entrance area, it becomes clear what has shaped Wertheim since time immemorial: its location at the confluence of the Main and Tauber rivers. The themes of water and shipping form the logical prelude to a museum visit. Historical boat models and exhibits on river travel document the significance of these lifelines for the development of the county over the centuries.
