The Tomi Ungerer Museum is the first museum in France to devote itself entirely to illustration drawing of the 20th century and the present. This area of graphic art, which for a long time was rather neglected, can look back on a long tradition in Strasbourg. The illustrator Tomi Ungerer was also born here in 1931. The work of this versatile and internationally renowned artist covers the most diverse directions of graphic art: illustrations for young people's books, advertising drawings, satirical drawings, etc. His book The Three Robbers is now considered a classic of children's literature, and the importance of his complete works is also unanimously recognized in the art world. Tomi Ungerer's political posters as well as his satirical drawings on social issues are now considered icons of this type of visual art worldwide.

Tomi Ungerer left a large part of his work to his hometown through donations since 1975. Today, the museum keeps 11,000 drawings by the artist and 6,500 toys from his private collection. This unique collection is complemented by works by other French and international illustrators.

The Tomi Ungerer Museum is dedicated to the art of illustration on three floors. On the first floor, the original drawings of Tomi Ungerer's most famous children's books - from the beginning of his career until today - are exhibited. The second floor displays posters and original drawings of the artist's advertising and satirical work. The garden level houses another facet of Tomi Ungerer's work with erotic-satirical drawings. Also integrated into the tour are some mechanical toys from the artist's collection.

The high sensitivity of the graphic art collections makes changing exhibitions necessary in order to keep them in the best possible condition. For this reason, the hanging is renewed three times a year, and new facets of Tomi Ungerer's graphic work can be discovered again and again.
