Bergen in Chiemgau

Tales in White and Blue · Gateway to Hochfelln

Bergen is a place of quiet tones. Those who come here aren't seeking the hustle and bustle, but honest, Upper Bavarian tranquility. As a state-recognized climatic health resort, the community offers exactly what you need for a true getaway: fresh Alpine air, green moorland landscapes, and a front-row seat with a view of the peaks.

For hikers, Bergen is a strategically fortunate hub. Since 2015, the Salt Alps Trail has marked an important stage here on its way from Lake Chiemsee across the Berchtesgadener Land to Obertraun in Austria. Following the traces of "White Gold," the route connects Alpine nature experiences with the fascinating history of salt production over 233 kilometers—a path that can be experienced particularly relaxed in Bergen.

View of the Maxhütte in Bergen

The undisputed star of the town is the 1,674-meter-high Hochfelln. It is not without reason that it is revered as the "Observation Terrace of the Chiemgau." Once at the top, a panorama opens up that, on clear days, stretches from the glittering surface of Lake Chiemsee to the snow-capped peaks of the Central Alps and the lights of Munich. For those who prefer level ground, the Bergener Moos offers a small natural wonder: a refuge for rare animal and plant species where time seems to have stood still out of respect for the sensitive ecology.

Editor's Tip

Take the cable car up the Hochfelln particularly in the late afternoon when the light becomes softer. Even though the town itself is very quiet, the summit offers a visual spectacle that you won't soon forget. For those interested in technology, a detour to the Maxhütte Museum is also worthwhile, as it impressively documents the region's industrial past.
