A timeless idyll in the middle of the "Bavarian Sea": Fraueninsel, affectionately known as Frauenchiemsee, is a place where the clocks follow their own decelerated pace. As the smallest municipality in Bavaria, it hosts a spiritual centerpiece that has shaped the soul of the region for over a millennium.
The moment you step onto the island, you feel the special aura of Frauenwörth Abbey. For over 1,200 years, Benedictine nuns have lived here according to the rules of their order—a consistency that acts like an anchor in our fast-paced times. Whether browsing through the abbey shop or taking a guided tour, you dive deep into a world that goes far beyond mere sightseeing.
Vibrant, rustic, and deeply inspiring: Fraueninsel differs radically from its big sister, Herreninsel. While the latter is dominated by the grand architecture of Ludwig II, Frauenchiemsee captivates with a densely settled, almost village-like romance. It is a gem where poets and painters found their muse among fragrant flower and herb gardens, and the snow-white Campanile—the free-standing bell tower—proudly reaches into the Bavarian sky.
But the island is not only a place of contemplation, but also of genuine enjoyment. Along the winding paths, island fishermen offer their freshly smoked Chiemsee whitefish (Renken)—a scent that is hard to resist. A special highlight is a stop at the "Inselbräu." In this cozy inn with its own brewery, you can enjoy Bavarian hospitality with a home-brewed beer before the regular ferries once again bridge the way back to the mainland.
Editor's Tip
Be sure to visit the island in the early morning hours, before the large crowds of visitors arrive on the ferries. That is when the silence in the alleys belongs almost entirely to you. And don't forget to try the famous abbey marzipan—it is handmade by the nuns according to an ancient recipe and is probably the sweetest secret of Lake Chiemsee.
