Fraueninsel (Womens' Island), also known as Frauenchiemsee, is the second largest of the three islands in Lake Chiemsee in Germany. It belongs to the municipality of Chiemsee in the Upper Bavarian district of Rosenheim and is the smallest municipality in the whole of Bavaria. Fraueninsel is home to the Frauenwoerth Monastery, a Benedictine convent that has lived according to the Rule of St. Benedict for over 1,200 years. In addition to church services, the monastery offers guided tours, seminars and has a monastery store at the gate.
The Fraueninsel, which we visit again after a long time, is a lively, quaint, winding and inspiring place.
It is completely different from the other three islands in Lake Chiemsee. It is smaller than the Herreninsel with its castle and park. However, it is densely populated and manageable. An idyllic and romantic gem that we immerse ourselves in for a few hours.
Many painters and poets found their inspiration here among the blooming and fragrant flower and herb gardens. We walk past the densely packed houses of the islanders. We admire the towering white campanile, the free-standing bell tower of the monastery.
Numerous inns and cafés invite you to linger, the fishermen from the island offer freshly smoked Chiemsee roe and other delicacies and we stop off at the Inselbräu, a cozy inn with its own brewery.
We take a quick look inside the small brewery and - before the guests arrive here on the regular ferries from the shores of Lake Chiemsee - also into the cozy pub.
