Châtillon-sur-Charlaronne is located in the middle of the former department of L'Ain and the Dombes lake district. The medieval old town, we learned, is known for its extraordinary floral splendor and its preserved buildings.
On a first visit, we got a first impression of this spot while sitting under the old market hall from the 15th century and strolling through the narrow streets.
Les Dombes is a great place to visit alone, with family or friends on foot, on horseback or by bike. Before La Dombes became a province of France in the 18th century, the northern part belonged to the Beaujeu and Bourbon families and the south to the Dukes of Savoy. But it was not until the 19th century that monks settled in Le Plantay and undertook to drain the swampy area where malaria was rampant. The monks dug hundreds of small lakes and ponds, making sure that they were slightly inclined so that the water ran to the drainage point known as "le thou". Fish farming developed. Carp and pike became a commercial success. Pond fishing still exists today and is active in the fall and winter. Visitors are welcome, so do not hesitate to come and see this ancient practice, you will not be disappointed!
The bird park in Villars-les-Dombes is located in the middle of the lake district. It is considered the most beautiful bird park in Europe with more than 3,000 species of birds from all over the world. Every year new zones are created for new birds. Children will not soon forget the lories eating out of their hands and the whole family can enjoy the breathtaking flight displays at the bird show. A wonderful day trip with lots to see.
Les Dombes is a great area for hiking with several circular trails from one lake to another. You can even rent bicycles to cycle along the roads before a small bus takes you back to the starting point. On your walk or bike ride, you may pass large, brick castles, some of which are fortified, typical of the region. Among the most beautiful are those at Bouligneux, Le Montellier, Joyeux and Saint-Paul-de-Varax.
Les Dombes is a golfer's paradise, as the wide open spaces are perfect sites for 18 holes. Over the years, La Dombes has become an important horse breeding region with numerous stud farms. There is no shortage of centers with indoor riding arenas or that offer horseback rides with family or friends.
History buffs will not be disappointed, as many villages boast beautiful Romanesque churches, some with their original frescoes. An absolute must, however, is a visit to Pérouges, a medieval village with cobbled streets and houses dating back to the 15th century. This popular tourist spot is ranked as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France." During your visit, don't forget to try the famous "galette", made according to a secret recipe.
Other gems in Les Dombes include the small village of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, a former manor with well-preserved 15th century buildings. Shoppers from all over Les Dombes still come to the weekly Saturday morning market.
Finally, we head towards the river Saône and the town of Trévoux, a former principality of the Dombes and seat of the Parlement de l'Ancien Régime, an 18th century building whose interior is decorated with magnificent paintings glorifying justice, listed as a historical monument.
