It all began in the 7th century when canals were dug through the wet, peaty soil of Saint-Omer by monks. Then many hundreds of years passed before we came across Saint-Omer, centrally located in the Hauts-de-France, which is why we chose this town as our starting point for getting to know this region for the first time. Despite intensive research, we had no idea what a wide range of possibilities awaited us here.
This is the central location, which is exactly the right choice if you want to be at the sea quickly (even without tolls) - or want to see the art treasures, for example in Roubaix. And even if you don't feel like day trips, the various possibilities to explore interesting things on foot or by bike are manifold.
France is not only a land of wine and champagne, but also of beer. Here in Saint-Omer is one of the largest breweries in northern France, the Brasserie Saint-Omer, which we were allowed to visit on the occasion of the Fête de la bière and we got an interesting tour of how the solid ingredients end up liquid and really good tasting beer.
La Coupole, the dome, means something to the history buffs in Germany. - Or to those interested in technology. Here is one of the milestones on the way to the moon and at the same time the launching base of the V2 rockets with which the German Wehrmacht attacked London. As so often, a place for divided emotions, but important for the historical and the technological aspect.
The wetlands, Les Marais, are located just outside the city gates. A trip by boat through a patch of earth, which is now protected in its originality, completely relaxes: we had to consciously remember to also turn on the camera for you and not "just" look and come down from the stress of the day.
We also highly recomend the exhibition at the Maison du Marais, which classifies what we have seen. Depending on your taste, the exhibition should be visited before or after the boat trip. The motto Breathe - Touch - See has its meaning, which is easily recognized during the visit and the trip.
