Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is the capital of the Lower Navarre region and a famous stage on the Camino de Santiago. It enchants the pilgrims who stop there as well as all lovers of beautiful medieval architecture.

Enclosed by a fortification wall, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port enchants visitors with its medieval cobblestone streets lined with beautiful houses, its old bridge over the Nive, picturesque facades along the water, and the imposing citadel. Rebuilt by Vauban, the citadel's silhouette towers majestically over the city's rooftops.

Many pilgrims begin their journey on the Way of St. James here. Three of the four branches coming from France meet in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, so in summer, the town is bustling with pilgrims from all corners of the world.

All the main sights can be found within the city walls. Crossing the Nive bridge leads through the Porte de Navarre into the Rue de la Citadelle. From there, you reach the church of Notre Dame. Continuing along the Rue de la Citadelle brings you to the Porte Saint Jacques and the path leading up to the Citadel.

The Citadel, which dominates the city from its rocky outcrop, has preserved the hallmarks of Vauban, including a paved ramp leading to a monumental arch. Today, the historic complex houses a school.
