The Saltalp-Trail was opened in 2015 as a new hiking route, much of which is also well suited for bicycle tours. Over 233 km, the cross-border trail leads from Prien am Chiemsee across the Chiemgau and Berchtesgadener Land to Obertraun on Lake Hallstatt at the foot of the Dachstein in Austria. Lake Chiemsee, Königssee and Lake Hallstatt are the unique scenic center between the foothills of the Alps and the high mountains.
The pastel-colored houses reflected in the smooth, shimmering waters of the lake and with its mountains sloping steeply on all sides would alone be enough to guarantee the fame of this place. The salt in the mountains above the town made it a center of salt production. The Hallstatt period (800 to 400 B.C.) refers to the early Iron Age in Europe, got its name from the village where the settlers and Celts of that time mined the salt here.
There is much to discover here: Numerous listed buildings convey their very special charm. Among the most outstanding buildings are the Catholic parish church with the late Gothic winged altar and the world-famous ossuary, which we will show in one of our next reports. The offers of culture, recreation and sports make the vacation in Hallstatt an unforgettable experience. It is the world cultural heritage from its lively side.
