The pastel-colored houses reflecting in the smooth water of the lake, and the steeply rising mountains, would alone be enough to guarantee Hallstatt's fame. But it is the "White Gold" that has shaped this place for millennia.

In the Footsteps of the White Gold

The Salzalpensteig was opened in 2015 as a hiking route covering 233 kilometers from Prien am Chiemsee to Obertraun. It follows the historical transport routes of salt. In Hallstatt, this history reaches its pinnacle: the "Hallstatt Period" (800 to 400 BC) names an entire era of the early Iron Age after this village, in whose mountains Celts and early settlers mined salt thousands of years ago.

Living World Heritage

Numerous listed buildings convey a very special charm. Among the most outstanding structures are the Catholic Parish Church with its late Gothic winged altar and the world-famous charnel house (Beinhaus). Hallstatt showcases World Heritage from its vibrant side—a perfect symbiosis of culture, history, and spectacular nature that makes a holiday here an unforgettable experience.

Our Tip

Take advantage of the early morning hours for a walk through the village before the day tourists arrive. When the mist still hangs over the lake and silence returns, Hallstatt reveals its most magical side.
