Here, in the very north of the Spessart region, our round trip begins, which will take a whole year to complete. Our campsite is located in the Hutten district, which belongs to Schlüchtern. This is the interface between the Rhön, Vogelsberg and Spessart. From here we take you to the various destinations that are easily accessible from here... at different times of the year, each with its own charm and making the region appear different each time. You can go on hikes, bike tours or even trips by car to explore the area... or to fill up the fridge.
The Spessart – a charming natural gem in Bavaria and Hesse. It is a low mountain range covered by dense, mostly intact forests, with rolling hills, peaceful valleys and charming little villages dotting the landscape.
Historically, the Spessart region has been shrouded in mystery, often associated with legends of robbers and hidden treasure. In fact, Wilhelm Hauff was inspired by this region to write his famous novella ‘The Inn in the Spessart’. And indeed, the lives of ‘ordinary people’ in this region were extremely hard.
Our first excursion takes us to the main town, Schlüchtern, to stock up on supplies for the fridge. In the north and northeast of the city, all the usual suspects have gathered.
Today, the forest is a popular destination for nature lovers. There are fantastic hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities to explore the rich flora and fauna. Oaks and beeches dominate the forest, which is also home to red deer and wild boar. The Spessart Nature Park is also a must-see and showcases the region's biodiversity and cultural heritage.
The Spessart is a treasure trove for outdoor activities and quiet recreation. Here are some possibilities:
The forest is criss-crossed by well-maintained hiking and biking trails that offer beautiful panoramas for exploring the forest and meadows. Depending on your taste and fitness level, you can opt for a leisurely stroll or a challenging hike.
Cycling lovers will enjoy the bike paths that wind through the forest and villages.
Nature lovers will be in their element. Red deer, wild boar (which should be treated with due respect), foxes and birds live in the forests here and are a highlight of this region.
You can enjoy a picnic in one of the designated quiet spots in the middle of the towering trees. But only there! And no open fires or cigarettes. It's the perfect way to reconnect with nature and spend time with your loved ones.
Here at the beginning of our Spessart tour, there are three excursion destinations that should not be missed:
