Aschaffenburg is a medium-sized town with a charming mix of historical sites and beautiful, natural spots. Located in the northwestern part of Bavaria, it is one of the most appealing places we have visited in Germany.
We had a great time in Aschaffenburg before and during the filming. The old town in particular exudes its charm, a mixture of Lower Franconian and (already) Hessian. You will find lots of beautiful architecture, an imposing castle, restaurants, churches and shopping here is just like in a big city.
With only about 70,000 inhabitants, “Aschebersch”, as the city is also called in the local dialect, is a small center where history meets modern life.
As already mentioned, there is a surprising amount to explore and see in Aschaffenburg. It is not difficult to keep yourself busy for a day or two. But seeing everything the city has to offer is impossible... as it is everywhere. However, we did go to most of the main attractions and found a few places that should not be missed.
If you come to Aschaffenburg, you will see the huge Johannisburg Palace with a bit of luck. It is built of the region's distinctive red sandstone and is probably the most important Renaissance building in Germany. Built between 1605 and 1614, the palace is now open to the public and houses various art collections, living rooms furnished in the style of the era and a chapel.
I recommend a long stroll through the alleys that lead around the Theaterplatz. You can park your car in the underground car park there and it is not far to the banks of the Main. Quaint pubs invite you to stop by and taste the traditional (Lower) Franconian dishes.
From here it is also only a stone's throw to follow the Main upstream or to drive east into the Spessart.
Alternatively, you can cross just the Landingstrasse, reach the here and now and recover from the culture with window shopping and / or shopping.
