Aschaffenburg – or "Aschebersch," as the locals call it – is a fascinating center where Hohenstaufen history meets modern life. With its charming blend of Mediterranean flair and Lower Franconian tradition, it is undoubtedly one of the most appealing places along the river Main.
Renaissance on the Riverbanks
Anyone visiting Aschaffenburg will inevitably look towards the massive Johannisburg Palace. Built from red sandstone, it is considered one of Germany's most significant Renaissance buildings. Yet even beyond the grand monuments, the old town exudes its own charm: a successful blend of architecture, traditional pubs, and modern shopping flair makes any visit an experience that can easily keep pace with major metropolises.
Alleys, Flavors & River Panoramas
An extensive stroll through the alleys around Theaterplatz is a must. Here, you will find traditional inns serving Lower Franconian specialties that invite you to stay a while. From the historic old town, it’s just a stone's throw to the riverbanks. Whether you follow the river upstream or head east into the dense forests of the Spessart—Aschaffenburg is the perfect hub between nature and culture.
Our Tip
Park conveniently in the underground garage at Theaterplatz and simply let yourself drift through the alleys. Aschaffenburg needs time—one or two days are easily filled if you really want to enjoy the museums and parklands.
