Bad Orb is a charming small town in the Hessian Spessart. A state-recognized spa resort since 1909, the town attracts visitors seeking relaxation in picturesque nature or the healing power of its legendary brine springs.

The White Gold of the Orb Valley

Even the Celts valued the local brine springs and produced salt—the river name "Orb" still bears witness to this today. From 1064, "Orbaha" belonged to the Electorate of Mainz and developed into a town in the 13th century. Orb salt was a precious commodity transported via the "Eselsweg" (Donkey Path)—an ancient trade route leading from Schlüchtern across the Spessart to Miltenberg—to the river Main for shipping.

Healing Power & Tradition

When salt production became unprofitable in the mid-19th century, the era of the spa resort began. In 1837, pharmacist Franz Leopold Koch opened the first bathing establishment. The therapeutic use of the salt springs gave the town a new purpose. Today, hotels, resorts, and health facilities define the cityscape without losing the historic charm of its picturesque half-timbered houses.

The Graduation House: Sea Breeze in the Spessart

The Graduation House in Bad Orb

The graduation house is the town's most prominent structure. Originally built in 1806 to concentrate brine, the massive wooden construction now serves as a giant open-air inhalatorium. The brine trickles down blackthorn branches, enriching the air with salt—an effect similar to the seaside. It is the largest graduation house in Hesse and is not only medically valuable but also an architectural attraction.
