The Spessart forest has been the economic hub of the region for many centuries. Here in Neustadt am Main, it stretches right up to the river and, with its deciduous and coniferous trees, is ideal for hiking, cycling, or simply relaxing.
The village store and Café in the Klosterhof are brand-new and only recently opened. It’s a place where young and old from both sides of the Main meet, and where you can easily stock up on groceries for your RV’s fridge.
In addition to the wide variety of products, another noteworthy detail is the pricing, which certainly holds its own against the large, established supermarkets in Lohr and Marktheidenfeld.
The village café is also highly recommended: the coffee is delicious, the cakes are a real treat—though they might not be the best for your waistline... and you certainly won’t go hungry here.
When the sun comes out from April 1st on, you can enjoy the weather, some peace and quiet, and a fine regional beer in a historic setting... or perhaps coffee and cake—whatever suits your taste and mood.
The MainGlück campground is located directly on the Main River. From here, hiking and biking trails lead through the slopes of the Spessart into the forest.
An insider tip for visitors is the Forsthaus Aurora. For many, many years, it has been a popular destination for locals on Sundays and public holidays, as it is not open on other days.
There is a landmark building in the town that cannot be overlooked: the monastery church. Neustadt am Main is one of the oldest settlements along the lower Main River. The founding of the Benedictine monastery is first mentioned in documents dating from 768/769.
In 1909, the community of Dominican missionaries, which had originated in South Africa, sought a house in Germany for the training of young missionaries as the order's first settlement there. In the fall of 1909, they moved into the rent office of the former Benedictine abbey in Neustadt am Main. The convent was placed under the patronage of St. Joseph and was henceforth called “St. Joseph's Mission House, Neustadt am Main”.
During World War II, the Dominican Sisters purchased the Rentamt in Neustadt, and later the remaining monastery buildings, including the ruins of the Benedictine abbey. In 2022, 13 elderly nuns still lived in the monastery. The monastery in Neustadt will close at the beginning of 2023.
Now we know why there is a church and monastery complex here in the middle of the countryside, which only reveals its little secrets upon a closer look.
We are located here on the edge of the Spessart. The Main River marks the border. Excursions into nature, into the forest, up the hills, or down into the valley promise plenty to do and no boredom. And for those who want to breathe a little more city air, there is also plenty of choice: Marktheidenfeld is a great place to stock up on supplies for the refrigerator. In Lohr—which is in the opposite direction from the campground—you will find restaurants, cafés, and the Spessart Museum in the middle of the old town on Schlossplatz.
