Obernburg lies on the left bank of River Main, about halfway between Miltenberg and Aschaffenburg, from where I continue upriver.
The Romans built Fort Obernburg sometime around 107-110 AD as an outpost and to secure the Nasser Limes. The most important streets of the fort can still be seen in the old town today. The Roman troops remained on site until around 260-275 AD and left when Germanic tribes, especially Alemanni, took over in the course of the migration period.
There is no further mention of the town until 1183, at least there are no records. There are a few disputes between the Lords of Klingenberg and the Collegiate Church of Aschaffenburg. In the 19th century, Obernburg came under Bavarian rule and at the beginning of the 20th century, the proclamation of the Soviet Republic did not work out.
I am excited to see what new and perhaps interesting things await me here.
The city survived both world wars relatively unscathed. The historic old town has changed its appearance over the centuries. On my first visit, I found lovingly and expertly restored houses, picturesque and dreamy corners, inviting shops and restaurants.
The Roman town of Obernburg is located on the Limes and is also known as the “Pompeii on the Main” due to the special condition of the important ancient finds. These unique finds provide an authentic insight into ancient life in the fort.
Even though the great world history has rather passed Obernburg by, I learn a few of the many exciting stories in and about Obernburg on a city tour. From Roman times and the founding of the city in 1313 and the Middle Ages with the dark times of the witch hunt to the present day.
Medieval towers and city gates, magnificent half-timbered houses and small chapels are the perfect backdrop, with splashing fountains and a romantic rose garden.
