The Benedictine monastery marks the beginning of Schlüchtern’s history in the 8th century. Today, the town in the Bergwinkel region is a lively hub where the history of old trade routes meets the tranquillity of the Spessart.

From Abbey to Trading Town

Early settlers built their houses directly outside the monastery gates. With the economic rise of Frankfurt, the through road from Mainz to Leipzig—one of the most important arteries of the Middle Ages—became essential for the town. Schlüchtern’s layout was therefore shaped early on by major traffic flows. The old town as we see it today is the result of a turbulent development, from the plague and the destruction of the Thirty Years’ War to the economic shift from viticulture to tobacco cultivation in the 18th century.
