Our "last-night-problem": Since we generally set off for home on Fridays, we treat ourselves to a wonderful farewell dinner on the evening before.
In the Montignac region, this often leads to a challenge, as Thursday is a rest day for many restaurants. Following the motto "no risk – no fun," we drove to Montignac anyway—only about a ten-minute drive from the campsite—without any reservation. As it turned out, we were lucky: shortly after opening, a table for two was still available; a short time later, the place was filled to the last seat.
To be honest, we almost didn't stop because of the very reserved external appearance. But once inside, you find yourself in a cozy, small establishment. A warm hostess, a straightforward menu, and wines of the very finest define the picture.
That evening, we were the only foreigners. We quickly got in touch with a local family whose son immediately started practicing his German with us. So it became a wonderfully relaxed evening, embedded in the fun and joie de vivre of the local guests. The location on the street is not a bother at all, as there is hardly any traffic.
Anyone staying on the banks of the Vézère should definitely stop here. The menu is pleasantly focused and offers excellent wines from the region. While there is also beer, we didn't find a local variety—which for us was the perfect excuse to stick with the wine.
The prices are absolutely appropriate and fair for the quality offered. A visit to La Chaumière is highly recommended for anyone looking for the authentic France.
