Destination spotlight:
Upper Frankonia
Upper Franconia is the north-eastern part of the Bavarian region of Franconia. The seat of the Upper Franconia government is Bayreuth. Upper Franconia borders the states of Thuringia and Saxony, the Czech Republic and the administrative districts of Upper Palatinate, Middle Franconia and Lower Franconia.
The name Upper Franconia refers to its location on the Main River. Upper Franconia lies on the upper reaches of the river. This dates back to the formation of the Main district in the Bavarian Constitution drafted by Count Montgelas in 1808. The division of the territories was based on the French model and was primarily oriented towards river names.
Extensive forests, low mountain ranges, the Main River and its branches make this an ideal landscape for hiking and cycling. Towns such as Kulmbach, Bamberg and Bayreuth are also attractive destinations for trips and excursions, offering culture, history and culinary delights.
Destination spotlight:
Lower Frankonia
Lower Franconia has diverse and charming landscapes, from the deep valleys of the Main River and its vineyards, the agricultural areas of the Gäu, to the distinctive forests and landscapes of the Spessart, Odenwald, Rhön, Steigerwald and Hassberge.
Lower Franconia is home to cultural treasures of international renown (the UNESCO World Heritage Site Würzburg Residence, Bad Kissingen as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Great Spa Towns of Europe’, the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve), important artists (Tilmann Riemenschneider) and festivals (Mozart Festival) – all of which speak for Lower Franconia's excellent quality of life. It is a place where you can live and spend your holidays in a relaxed atmosphere.
